Violence erupts between rival gangs in north Belfast

Fresh violence broke out on Sunday evening in the sectarian flashpoint area of north Belfast as rival gangs took to the streets.

The trouble began when police were called to North Queen Street and Duncairn Gardens on Sunday night to keep loyalist and nationalist gangs apart after a blast bomb exploded in the middle of a road juncture.

Police said they came under attack from stones, bottles and other missiles as they dispersed both gangs from the flashpoint interface area.

Later a device exploded at the rear of a house in Newington Avenue.

No one was present in the house when the device exploded. However an oil tank at the rear of the house was damaged.

Meanwhile several miles away at Newtownabbey police officers were also attacked.

The trouble started on Sunday when crowds of youths blocked O'Neill Road with burning cars and other debris from a nearby bonfire site. Five petrol bombs were thrown at police as they tried to clear the area.
