Government partners small business in new era

Despite the difficulties of the last two years, the small business sector in Northern Ireland is demonstrating both strength and confidence Sir Reg Empey Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment has said.

The Minister was speaking on Monday morning in Belfast at the launch of a new Federation of Small Business (FSB) report: ‘Lifting the Barriers to Growth.’

The report, which builds on the previous FSB study ‘Barriers To Survival And Growth’ published two years ago, received contributions from 290 companies in Northern Ireland.

Sir Reg said: “It would be my hope that the ongoing implementation of the Northern Ireland Better Regulation Strategy, the launch of the Northern Ireland Business Support Partnership and the formation of Invest NI will signal the beginning of a new era of partnership between the business community and devolved government in Northern Ireland, working together to build a strong, diverse and world class economy.

“The ongoing implementation of the Northern Ireland Better Regulation Strategy is aimed at ensuring that the regulatory burden on businesses is kept to a minimum.

“It will ensure that businesses are informed in advance of any new legislation likely to impact upon them and how they might prepare for its impact.”

Referring to the launch of a new Northern Ireland Business Support Partnership, to be launched on Wednesday 29 May, the Minister said: “It will provide an ideal forum where, through partnership, co-operation and development of mutual understanding, the promotion of a better approach to business compliance could be achieved.

“Invest NI is now a reality, with its emphasis firmly on encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship as a means of developing the Northern Ireland economy. The importance of working together with business representative organisations, such as the Federation of Small Businesses, in developing such initiatives, cannot be over emphasised.

“It is in the spirit of working together that we can achieve common goals,” the Minister concluded.
