Two youths charged over west Belfast road death

Two teenagers have been charged in connection with the death of a 21 year old who was struck down by a stolen car yesterday in west Belfast.

The two accused appeared together at Lisburn Magistrates Court on Monday.

Stephen Campbell, a 19-year-old mechanic from Broompark in Belfast, was charged with causing the death of Kieran Conlon by dangerous driving. He was also accused of taking a car without consent and destroying it by arson.

The second accused, a 16-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also charged with arson and allowing himself to be carried in the car.

Both were remanded in custody until next month.

Kieran Conlon from Dungloe Crescent in Lenadoon was leaving a nightclub on the Stewartstown Road around 3.30am on Sunday morning when he was knocked down by the stolen vehicle.

Mr Conlon was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast but died from his injuries a short time later.

A 19-year-old faces charges of dangerous driving causing death, stealing a vehicle and arson while a 16-year-old will face charges of allowing himself to be carried in a stolen vehicle and arson.

Last night hundreds of people gathered in west Belfast to hold a protest against car crime.

MP for the area Gerry Adams attended the rally last night, alongside the group Families Bereaved Through Car Crime who are calling for tougher sentences for car thieves and so-called joyriders.
