NI's Annual Health Budget Goes Online

Billions of pounds are to be spent on health across Northern Ireland in the coming year.

The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) has just published its annual report, the 'Strategic Resources Framework', which highlights how it plans to spend its 2008/09 budget.

The report - which is available to download from the Department's website - details how £3.4 billion of the Department's £3.9 billion revenue budget will be spent on health and social care across a multitude of services.

A spokeswoman for DHSSPS said: "The Strategic Resources Framework is an annual publication that highlights where the Department plans to spend its funds.

"By making these plans available to the public, the department is showing tax payers where their money will be spent.

"The Department remains committed to providing clarity and accountability in the use of public funds," she said, noting that the report also helps analyse what services are being delivered at a detailed geographical level.

"This helps us to ensure that the public get the best services available for the money deployed," she continued.

It also shows that acute services - such as frontline services like A&E - account for over £1.1billion of the total planned expenditure by commissioners, an increase of £111 million on funds last year.

This, together with funds to be spent on elderly care, accounts for nearly two thirds of the total financial resources covered in the report.

Expenditure on Primary Care services, totalling £780 million, has been included in the publication for the first time this year.
