Limerick Looses 500 Jobs, But Cork Promised Thousands

In another devastating blow for Limerick workers, a major hi-tech manufacturer has announced almost 500 job losses.

Some 477 workers at RR Donnelly (formerly Banta) will lose their jobs at Raheen Industrial Estate. The jobs are to be phased out over nine months.

The job losses are being attributed to the closure of one of the company's main clients, Dell, which decided to move its manufacturing base to Poland last month.

But as the hi-tech industry begins to flounder in one place, it has been confirmed that Ireland's first science park will be built in Cork with the potential for 6,000 new jobs.

The project, which will be located on a 150-acre site at Curaheen is expected to pump €450m into the local economy every year.

The development is hoped to be in place by 2012.

Speaking this morning on Cork's Red FM, County Manager Martin Riordain said that it was a step forward for Cork.
