Nesbitt salutes award-winning local architecture
Environment Minister Dermot Nesbitt has paid tribute to four architectural development schemes in Northern Ireland, which have been successful in the 2002 Civic Trust Awards.
The Civic Trust Awards are viewed as one of the UK’s most prestigious awards schemes for architecture and environmental design.
Every year the Civic Trust gives out a range of awards in the following categories: Special Awards, Awards, Commendations and Mentions. Amongst the successes for Northern Ireland this year were: Newtownabbey Civic Centre, which won one of 50 Civic Trust Awards; An Droichead, Nursery School & Community Rooms and Bunscoil Phoibail Feirste Primary School which won commendations; and the refurbishment and extension to Linen Hall Library which received mention.
Mr Nesbitt said: “What a great accomplishment for the architectural and building industry in Northern Ireland. The Civic Trust Awards are only given to the most outstanding examples of architecture and environmental design.
“Further, there was an exceptionally high number of entries this year – over 500. Consequently competition was extremely tough with all winners demonstrating particularly high standards.
“I hope, therefore, that Northern Ireland’s success this year will encourage everyone in the industry to continue to strive to create a quality environment for present and future generations.”
The Civic Trust Awards have been established for 42 years, and are given to outstanding examples of new architecture, restoration, town planning, landscapes and public art.
The judges look not only for design excellence, but also projects that benefit their local communities and environments.
The awards scheme in Northern Ireland is organised by the Civic Trust in partnership with the Department of the Environment’s Planning Service and focused on the Metropolitan areas within the UK.
Entries for the 2003 Civic Trust Awards will be invited from June 2002 and will cover the countryside and country towns in the UK.

The British Safety Council is inviting businesses and organisations in Northern Ireland to enter its National Safety Awards scheme. Six organisations in Northern Ireland are in line for awards with applications invited from large and small enterprises, and from public and private sectors. Last year more than 1,000 organisations were honoured.
