Tragic Death Of Child In Farm Accident Investigated

Tributes have been paid to an eight-year-old girl who died after an accident at a farm in Co Tyrone yesterday evening.

Alison Torrens, from Drumquin, is the daughter of well-known horse trainer Mervyn Torrens. Local councillor Frankie Donnelly, who knows the family well, told the BBC the family were "devastated" at the loss of their "beautiful child".

"They are a very well-known and well-respected family. Unfortunately this tragic accident has come to their door.

"Our sympathies go out to the family," he said.

An inspector from the NI Health and Safety Executive has visited the scene of the tragedy, in west Tyrone, near Omagh (see map) and is investigating reports that the little girl may have been hit by farming machinery while playing.

It is understood the accident happened sometime around 6pm.

Reports today indicate that she had been playing with her sister close to where a tractor and land roller was working, and had got caught under machinery.
