Illegal diesel factory shut down

An illegal diesel factory was shut down yesterday during a joint Customs and PSNI raid in County Antrim.

Acting on intelligence and surveillance Customs officers uncovered the workings of a major fuel laundering plant in Islandreagh, on the outskirts of Dunadry on Wednesday afternoon.

The search resulted in the recovery of a 40ft trailer with six tanks of fuel, containing around 4,500 litres of contaminated fuel.

A jeep, a forklift truck and a number of power tools were also recovered.

Superintendent Mike Little of Antrim PSNI said: “As this factory had the potential capacity to produce up to 75,000 to 100,000 litres of illegal diesel every week, it is a serious blow to the criminals involved in diesel smuggling.”

A local man arrested at the Antrim site has been charged under the Customs and Excise Management Act in relation to the evasion of excise duty and has been bailed to appear before Belfast magistrates’ court on 12 June.
