Honourary Knighthood For Ted Kennedy

One of the most potent American advocates of peace in Northern Ireland is to receive an honourary knighthood, it has been announced.

Senator Ted Kennedy, (pictured) brother of former US president JF Kennedy, is to be knighted by the Queen for his work in the province during the peace process.

The announcement is expected to be made today, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown addresses both American houses of Congress.

Seventy-seven year old Senator Kennedy is currently being treated for a brain tumour, having collapsed at the inauguration of President Barack Obama in January.

The senator has represented his home state of Massachusetts for more than 46 years.

Of Irish-American decent, Mr Kennedy has maintained links with Northern Ireland throughout the peace process, most recently visiting Stormont on Devolution Day almost two years ago.

On Saint Patrick's Day 2005, Mr Kennedy refused to receive Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams, following the brutal murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney.

Mr Kennedy will become one of a handful of American national to be awarded the honour of knighthood, however, under the US constitution the senator will not be allowed to use the prefix 'Sir'.
