UK sees slight rise in benefit claimants
The number of unemployed people claiming benefit in the UK has risen by 5,400 and the official unemployment rate for April stands at 3.2%.
The latest figures from the Office for National Statistics show that despite analysts' predictions of a slight decrease in the claimant count, the number actually rose by 5,400 to a total of 953,000, representing the second monthly increase in a row, giving rise to speculation over the strength of the supposed recovery of the UK economy.
However, UK minister for employment, Nick Brown, described the figures as a positive sign, and added: "At a time when other countries have experienced greater difficultly, this demonstrated the resilience and hard-won stability of the British economy and labour market."
