Royal couple attend garden party in Hillsborough

The royal couple have left the Balmoral Show in Belfast to attend Hillsborough Castle where a garden party is taking place on Wednesday afternoon.

Earlier in the day the Queen and Prince Philip attended the annual agricultural show at the King’s Hall in Belfast which is expected to draw around 60,000 visitors.

The couple are nearing the end of their three-day visit to the province, which forms part of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee three month tour of the United Kingdom.

On Wednesday morning, the couple attended an ecumenical thanksgiving service in St Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast where hundreds of well-wishers packed the great cathedral chamber and lined the streets outside.

Meanwhile, following last night’s royal address to politicians in Stormont, a local assembly member has echoed the call made by the Queen calling for all sides of the political divide to build trust and create a better future for Northern Ireland.

The Ulster Unionist assembly member for Lagan Valley, Ivan Davis, said all members of the Assembly must make a concerted effort to ensure the administration works for the good of the people of Northern Ireland.

He said: “Life here is certainly never straightforward but if those of us who are elected representatives listen to what Her Majesty said and act on it, then there is genuine hope that the future.

“People here are crying out for normality after 30 long years of violence and while the four years of the Assembly’s life have not been without difficulty we should be proud of what has been achieved.”
