Unchanged unemployment figure welcomed

Trade and Enterprise Minister Sir Reg Empey has welcomed new figures showing that Northern Ireland unemployment has remained static, with no change on the previous three months.

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO) definition of unemployment, 46,000 people - 6.1% of the workforce - are unemployed, lower than the figures for both London (6.8%) and Scotland (6.7%). However, the province's figure compares with an unemployment rate of 5.1% for the UK as a whole.

Claimant count unemployment in Northern Ireland during April was 4.7%, down 0.3 percentage points on the rate for one year earlier.

Commenting on the figures, Sir Reg Empey, said: “There are signs that business confidence is beginning to return and I am hopeful that certain sectors of the local economy have come through the worst effects of 2001. I am fully conscious that several of our local industries, both old and new, continue to battle against changes in markets and in demands for certain products.

“However, I believe we have a good opportunity for creating new jobs locally through growth in tourism and the Northern Ireland industry itself is putting great efforts into making that happen, with considerable investment in new and existing facilities.

He added: “If we can encourage confidence in local tourism, both urban and rural areas can reap the benefits in terms of much needed employment which will help counter-balance job losses, particularly in traditional industries.”
