Public appeal after body found in Warrenpoint

Police have made an urgent appeal to the public to help them identity a body which was found earlier today near a golf course in County Down.

The body was found at the side of a road at Mound Road outside Warrenpoint by a passing member of the public around midday on Wednesday who then raised the alarm to the police.

The Warrenpoint dual carriageway has been closed while police examine the scene.

The Mound Road and three holes of the nearby Warrenpoint golf course have also been closed.

There has also been speculation, which has yet to be confirmed by the police, there may be two bodies in the area which is surrounded by dense undergrowth.

Police have said clothes on the body include a zip up cardigan with green, red and blue horizontal stripes with a light green polo shirt underneath.

Anyone who can help police have been urged to contact detectives in Newry on 028 30 265500.

Meanwhile, earlier on Wednesday, two bomb alerts on the Crumlin Road in Belfast were declared hoaxes.

British army bomb experts dealt with two suspect devices near the Everton Complex on the Crumlin Road. A suspect device was left outside the gate and one inside the grounds of the cross-community centre. A controlled bomb explosion was carried out on one of the devices early on Wednesday morning.

The complex is used as a cross community centre and caused major disruption to a group of disabled men and women who had to vacate the centre at the time.

In the south of the city, the citybound carriageway of the M1 motorway was closed at Stockman’s Lane because of a bomb scare, which caused chaos for the heavy traffic bound for the Balmoral show which began today. This was also declared a hoax.
