Sectarian clashes erupt in east Belfast

Over the weekend serious rioting broke out between rival factions in the Short Strand area.

The rioting erupted in Madrid Street in east Belfast in the early hours of Sunday 12 May.

Acid bombs, stones, bottles and up to 11 shots were fired at police during the disturbances, which were uncannily similar to disturbances which have plagued north Belfast for the past nine months.

At least 20 petrol bombs were thrown during the disturbances and a police Landrover was destroyed by fire.

Three police officers were injured, one of whom required hospital treatment for a facial injury.

The Secretary of State, Dr John Reid, has said he is disgusted with the violence.

“These thugs have nothing better to do than attack those who are protecting lives and property on behalf of us all.

“When will they realise that in attacking police officers they are attacking the future of society and frustrating the will of the vast majority of law-abiding people.

“I would appeal to anyone with information on this incident to inform the police immediately.”
