Scenic Cycle Ride To Aid Cancer Research

This year's Volac Bike Ride in aid of cancer research lands in Northern Ireland soon with over 50 cyclists coming to cover a 150 mile rural route.

An annual event held by staff at Volac International to raise funds for Cancer Research UK the bike ride takes in a different region each year.

The last ride from Cambridge to Holland raised £14,182 for this charity, which funds cancer research at centres such as Belfast City Hospital.

The event's NI co-ordinator Alistair Sampson has prepared a route from Antrim Town taking rural by ways through Parkgate, Doagh and Ballyclare to Larne.

"Taking place on Saturday, May 24, this is an easy, early section to stretch our legs and give riders a view of some of the best farmland in NI.

"Then we head up the long and lovely Antrim Coast to Torr Head before gliding round to Ballycastle taking in spectacular views across Rathlin to the Western Isles of Scotland," he said.

With the rest of Saturday free for relaxation Volac staff riders will be ready to go bright and early on Sunday morning: "Again visiting riders from the mainland, Holland and the Republic are in for a treat as they sail along past Bushmills to the Giant's Causeway, Portrush and Portstewart with Donegal in the distance," Alistair added.

"Then we are homeward bound over the final stretch through quieter roads taking in Kilrea, Portglenone and Randalstown back to Antrim."

Volac staff have supported Cancer Research UK for almost a decade since the first Great Milk Ride cycled out of NW Wales to Cambridge in 1998.

Cancer Research UK is the largest charity in these islands funding research at major centres from London teaching hospitals to Oxbridge, Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh and the midlands.

To sponsor these hardy Volac cyclists forward a cheque in favour of Cancer Research UK to Volac International, Orwell, Herts, SG8 5QX. Donations are also welcome by website
