Hostage rescued during foiled money heist

The police have foiled an attempt to steal a “substantial” amount of money from a security firm and rescued a hostage during a dramatic undercover police operation in County Down.

Five men have been arrested as a result of an extensive undercover operation which lasted 16 hours.

The police said the operation began around teatime on Thursday April 25 after a house in County Down was taken over by five armed men.

They abducted a 22-year-old man and told his father, who works for a security delivery company, that his son would be killed if he did not follow their instructions.

The man was forced to drive to work in east Belfast on Friday and drive to a location on the outskirts of east Belfast with a substantial sum of cash. The gang then transferred the money to another vehicle and made off.

However the police said they had become aware of what was happening at this stage. The hostage was released in Dunmurry in south Belfast while police were stopping vehicles in the Carryduff area. Five men were then arrested while houses were searched in the Carryduff area and the money recovered.

Assistant chief constable Alan McQuillan said the operation had been a "complete success".

He said: "I am absolutely delighted with the outcome of this operation. My officers worked long hours under intense pressure to ensure that no member of the public was injured, that the culprits were arrested and the money recovered."
