Unions Meet DHL After Cuts Announcement

Emergency talks are under way at Liberty Hall in Dublin between management and unions at logistics firm, DHL.

The meeting comes after an announcement last week that major cuts in the domestic delivery facility at DHL Express would be made.

Some 105 jobs are expected be lost by this August when the company closes seven regional depots in Galway, Sligo, Cavan, Athlone, Waterford, Enniscorthy and Tralee.

The remaining 215 redundancies would arise through re-structuring of the remaining three hubs in Dublin, Cork and Shannon/Limerick.

The multinational employs 1,600 staff in Ireland in four separate divisions and plans to cut 320 jobs.

It intends to maintain its international delivery operation.

The company claimed the financial crash was responsible for the job losses. Announcing the job cuts a spokesman said: "As the economic downturn has deepened, like all businesses we have examined our cost base, in particular our domestic delivery model."

It is understood DHL is briefing the unions on the financial situation at the company and examining the operations in each of the regional hubs.
