TV Drama Relives Mowlan Legacy
Filming has begun in Belfast for a new TV drama on the life of the former NIO Secretary of State, Mo Mowlam, pictured.
The film, to be aired by Channel 4 in 2010, stars Oscar-nominated actress Julie Walters in the role of Mowlam.
It examines the politican's rise to prominence in New Labour and her part in the events that led to the Peace Process in Northern Ireland.
Channel 4's Head of Drama, Liza Marshall, said that Mo Mowlam was "one of the most inspiring figures of our recent political past".
"I can't think of an actress who could more powerfully capture her energy, wit and ultimately the tragedy of her situation than Julie Walters," said Marshall.
Applauded for her recent roles in both Mamma Mia and the Harry Potter films, Walters will share the screen with a renowned cast.
NI actors Adrian Dunbar (Ashes to Ashes) and John Lynch (The Yellow House) join Dún Laoghaire-born Eoin McCarthy (Alien vs. Predator) and Englishman Steven Mackintosh (Good) to play the Northern Ireland politicians David Trimble, Gerry Adams, Martin McGuiness and also another well known Secretary of State, Peter Mandelson.
David Haig (My Boy Jack) will play Mowlam's husband, Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot) will act as her friend and colleague Adam Ingram and Toby Jones - who had also taken part in the Harry Potter films' cast - will play the role of her doctor.
The script has been written by Neil McKay and directed by Emmy award-winner Philip Martin.
It is based on extensive research, involving interviews with key players in the NI Peace Process, colleagues and her family, who have given their whole-hearted support to the project.
