NI Nursing Home Patients Carry MRSA

A study has found that 24% of all nursing-home patients in Northern Ireland are carrying the antibiotic-resistant MRSA superbug.

The research by Queens University in Belfast was commissioned following an increase in the number of people being referred from nursing homes to hospitals with MRSA infections.

Swabs were taken from more than 1,100 residents in 45 nursing homes, 24% of whom were found to be carrying the bacterium, along with 7% of staff members.

Not all of those who carry MRSA become infected, but the authors of the study said the prevalence requires a re-examination of infection control strategies.
