Chip Pan Fire Leaves Family Homeless
A fire in west Belfast has left a family of five homeless.
A chip pan is believed to have caught fire at the family home in Kenard Avenue, Andersonstown, at around 6am on Sunday morning.
After waking up and smelling smoke the mother was able to get her partner and two children, aged 11 and one, and another adult who was staying with them out of the house.
Lenny Entwistle, assistant group commander for the fire and rescue service in north and west Belfast, said: "It is fortunate that the mother woke up. A smoke alarm was in place but it was on a sloping ceiling above the stairs and did not go off in time."
Firefighter Lenny Entwhistle added: "This poor family have lost all their possessions and lost their home.
"Thankfully they escaped with minor injuries - they were suffering from smoke inhalation. We could have had a disaster on our hands."
