Police revisit scene of training centre explosion
Detectives investigating a suspected dissident republican bomb attack on a police training centre have urged the public to come forward with information.
Officers revisited the scene of the blast at Garnerville College in east Belfast on Wednesday night. They stopped cars to find out if anyone driving through the area on Tuesday evening spotted any suspicious activities.
The device was found outside Garnerville at 11pm on Tuesday. Army bomb disposal experts were called in and about 100 people within the college were moved out, along with the residents from several homes in the surrounding area.
The device exploded just after midnight while it was being examined. There were no reports of any injuries but the rear gates of the college, where the device exploded, were damaged by the blast.
Belfast’s area police commander, Assistant Chief Constable Alan McQuillan said: “This is not an attack on the police service but an attack on all the people in Northern Ireland who want to move forwards.”
A graduation ceremony for the first recruits to the new Police Service of Northern Ireland was held at the college earlier this month.
SDLP leader Mark Durkan condemned the bombing: “This callous attack was designed not only to policing training facilities but also to undermine the new beginning to policing. I know that it will not succeed. Just as the new police trainee showed courage in joining, they are showing courage now by not letting this attack divert them from their chosen career.”

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

TWO elderly Protestant sisters have escaped injury after a petrol bomb attack on their East Belfast home. The women, aged 73 and 79, escaped injury after a passing police patrol discovered a fire at their home and forced their way into the house in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
