Industrial Trouble Hits Transport And Retail

Workers on a ferry serving Cape Clear Island in west Cork yesterday staged a second day of strike action.

While Tesco staff separately moved to industrial action, the workers on the Naomh Ciaran II are striking in protest at pay cuts ranging from 22% for deckhands to 27% for the ship's master.

According to SIPTU, the vessel's owner also wants them to actually work "for free" for four weeks this summer.

Also looming is news that workers at 19 Tesco stores are threatening to go on strike across Ireland.

The Mandate trade union served strike notice on the company this week following a long dispute over working hours.

Over 95% of employees at the stores voted in favour of industrial action.

The strike will take place on July 2nd and it will be followed by two more days of action the following week.
