Discounted holidays not as cheap as advertised say Travelcare
A survey released by independent travel agent, Travelcare has said that holidaymakers are being fooled into thinking they have bought a bargain package in the sun.
The survey revealed that some customers going on breaks are paying more on so-called discounted holidays than those paying full brochure prices.
It follows a recent report from the Institute of Trading Standards which said that "holiday brochures are giving consumers no meaningful way of comparing prices and there is still a blatant lack of transparency in pricing".
One example from Travelcare’s survey revealed that a holiday in Minorca, departing from the same airport on the same date to the same hotel, varied in price by more than £500 among three different companies.
A spokesperson for Travelcare said their research showed that many holidaymakers were confused by discounts and that these discounts were creating unrealistic expectations.
Commenting on the findings Bruce Treloar, of the Institute of Trading Standards, said the current situation was totally unacceptable and that consumers were being put at a disadvantage by the "smoke and mirrors" which surround holiday prices. (MB)
