Cramphorn not applying for top police post

The Acting Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn has announced that he will not be applying for the top post as chief of the Northern Ireland Police Service.

The deadline for the £130,000 a year post of chief constable expired on Wednesday April 10.

Mr Cramphorn said that it had become apparent to him that the Policing Board were looking for a style and type of chief constable that he could never be.

M Cramphorn is currently Acting Chief Constable following the departure of Sir Ronnie Flanagan at the end of March.

In a statement Mr Cramphorn said: “It has become apparent to me that the board's aspiration is for a chief constable of a style and type that I could never be.

“In recognition of this and out of respect for the Board’s prerogative in the matter of the appointment of chief officers I have therefore decided not to burden the Board with an application which would be in neither my own or the Board’s long term best interests.”

Colin Cramphorn, aged 45, was appointed Deputy Chief Constable in Northern Ireland in September 1998.

Recently, he was short listed for five chief constable posts - Thames Valley, Sussex, Manchester, Strathclyde and Lothian and Borders.

It is rumoured that the number of contenders pitching their hat into the ring is low. Among those expected to apply are two senior PSNI officers: Alan McQuillan, the assistant chief constable for Belfast; and Chris Albiston, who has returned from secondment in Kosovo. (AMcE)
