Electricians Strike Over Pay Dispute

Thousand's of Ireland's electricians are to go on strike today over an ongoing dispute about their pay.

Pickets have been placed on hundreds of construction sites, including some high-profile projects such Terminal Two at Dublin Airport and the Lansdowne Road stadium.

The strike action comes as talks at the Labour Relations Commission to avert the action collapsed over the weekend.

Jack O'Connor, General President of workers union Siptu, has come out in support of the action, saying electricians had exhausted every possible alternative procedure.

“Ultimately the electricians must be supported by all workers because the employers’ objective of cutting pay and tearing up agreements reflects the primary aim of the wealthy elite in our society, which is, above all else, to preserve their own assets and privileged position," Mr O'Connor said.

He added: "Their shallow analysis of the crisis therefore sees attacks on workers living standards as the best way of repairing the damage done to our economy by the array of speculators, developers and their cronies."

Electricity supply is not being affected.
