Agri-Minister Praises Sainsbury's
Efforts to develop a better deal between a UK supermarket and NI dairy farmers have been praised.
Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew lauded efforts by Sainsbury's innovative Dairy Development Group to include local dairy farmers.
The Stormont Minister was speaking as Sainsbury's Dairy Development Group - a partnership scheme between the supermarket and the local milk sector to improve transparency in the supply chain - gets down to work locally.
She noted that this group will consist of a dedicated 'pool' of farmers producing milk specifically for Sainsbury's local stores.
Commenting on the supermarket chain's initiative, the Minister said: "Sainsbury's announcement offers a welcome boost to the local dairy industry and will deliver benefits to those farmers who are participating in the scheme.
"Their decision to extend the Dairy Development Group couldn't have come at a better time, given the harsh economic realities that the local agri-food sector is currently facing.
"The announcement demonstrates their commitment to local farmers and is a good example of best practice by a multiple retailer," she said, noting that initiatives like the Dairy Development Group go "some way to bridge the gap between 'gate and plate' in the modern supply-chain".
"I am always keen to encourage any initiative or opportunity, which helps to protect and enhance the sustainability of local farming," the Sinn Féin Minister concluded.
