Council Backs Newry Hotel Plans

Plans for two new hotels in south Down have been progressed, after gaining support from the local council.

Newry and Mourne District Council approved proposals to build a Premier Inn in Newry city, which will now be lodged with the Planning Service.

The hotel chain presented its plans for the former ATS site on the Downshire Road to the council last month.

The three phase plans could see the construction of new offices as well as a 120-bed three star hotel.

Newry Mayor John Feehan said there is a need for more bed-space in the city.

"Newry has for many years been attempting to increase the number of hotel beds in its area to facilitate business people and attract major conferences to our city," he said.

Newry City Centre Management and Newry Chamber of Commerce and Trade have also supported the proposed scheme.

Meanwhile, the Planning Service has received plans for a new four-star hotel in Rostrevor.

The £15m developemt could see a 100-bed hotel and spa built on the Greenpark Road within the next 12 months.
