Redundancies Up By 142% Since 2008

Job losses have risen by 142% according to statistics released by the Irish Government.

The Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment revealed today that a total of 49,009 people have been made redundant so far this year, an increase of 142% on the same period of 2008

The Irish Small and Medium Enterprises (ISME) association responded to the news, describing the figures as "dismal".

ISME Chief Executive, Mark Fielding said the latest figures confirmed their worst fears on job losses: "The severity of the problem merits a serious response from a Government 'en vacances', and it is absolutely essential that they take immediate steps to both save and create jobs, unfortunately, as the Government holidays, the dole queues lengthen," he said.

Meanwhile, Patricia Callan, Director of the Small Firms' Association (SFA), called the figures "staggering in their immensity" and urged the Government to take immediate action to create opportunities for people.

"It is vitally important that we don't allow a whole new generation to be lost to long-term unemployment; instead we should allow them to maintain their skill base and add to the competitiveness of smaller enterprises by matching the two on mainstream work placement programmes," she added.
