Police hold Castlereagh raid suspect for further questioning
Police holding a person in connection with the St Patrick's Day raid at Castlereagh Police Station have been given more time to question the suspect.
The suspect is to be questioned for an extra period following a successful police petition to a county court judge.
The suspect was among four men and two women who were arrested following raids across the province on Saturday involving up to 400 police officers. The five other suspects were released on Monday evening.
Sinn Féin president Gerry Adams has attacked Secretary of State John Reid over the handling of the investigation by the PSNI. During an Easter Rising commemoration rally in New Lodge, Belfast, on Sunday, Mr Adams said: “Let’s make it clear to John Reid and anyone else who’s listening. Republicans will not be scapegoated and will not accept responsibility for the working out of the British agenda.”
Among the five people released by police last night was Bobby Storey, a veteran republican who had been one of 38 prisoners who escaped from the Maze prison in 1983. He is reportedly the IRA’s director of intelligence.
An Englishman residing in Edenderry Village was also arrested after 40 police swooped on his house on Saturday morning.
None of those arrested, it is believed have any connected to the security forces.
The investigation team, which is being led by Detective Chief Superintendent Phil Wright, is now moving away from the possibility that the break-in was an 'inside job' – a view which was initially advocated by Sir Ronnie Flanagan. The former Chief Constable said last week that he would be "surprised" if paramilitaries or civilians were involved.
Running in conjunction with the criminal investigation, an inquiry by former senior civil servant Sir John Chilcot will determine the circumstances surrounding the March 17 break-in.
