Minister welcomes £26m IT investment for primary schools

An investment of £26 million in computers and support services for local primary schools across Northern Ireland has been welcomed by the Education Minister, Martin McGuinness.

The contract, which was signed with Viglen Limited, is part of Stormont’s ‘Classroom 2000 Programme’ and will provide larger primary schools with extensive Information and Communications Technology (ICT) managed services.

The announcement on Wednesday March 27 follows the award of a £16 million ICT investment for 190 smaller primary schools in October 2001. Taken together, these investments will ensure all primary schools will have the most up to date computer facilities by the end of 2002.

This contract will result in the provision of over 10,500 workstations, over 660 servers and 329 CD servers into primary schools - providing almost 120,000 pupils with state-of-the-art computer equipment, Internet and email access.

Mr McGuinness said: “The use of ICT in the primary sector helps the teaching and learning of subjects across the curriculum, and in particular helps raise standards through the development of pupils’ literacy and numeracy skills. I very much look forward to seeing these new resources in action in our schools and witnessing the benefits they bring to the entire learning process.” (AMcE)
