Cave Hill Boy Rescued

A boy has been rescued and taken to hospital after falling on a steep cliff path on the Cave Hill. The victim, aged nine, was reported to be in a stable condition after initial treatment by paramedics on a head injury. The boy was out walking with his father on Monday when he fell on the path and slid some 60 feet, according to witnesses. The father could not immediately locate his son and raised the alarm and the PSNI helicopter was sent to the area, spotted the boy and guided the paramedics and Fire and Rescue Service to him.

Benefits Office Flooded

Enniskillen Jobs and Benefits Office has been closed due to flooding. However, the Social Security Agency and the Department for Employment and Learning have put arrangements in place to contiue to provide services to the public. From today (Tuesday 25th) face-to-face services will be provided at the Lakeland Forum, Enniskillen until further notice. Anyone wishing to conduct business by phone can use the existing telephone number 028 6634 3333.

Water-bout Jobs? Says Durkan

Foyle MP Mark Durkan has met with Laurence MacKenzie, the newly appointed Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Water (NIW) to press him on the need to secure and increase NI Water jobs in the North West. The MLA also raised the issue of the proposed new NIW headquarters, the contract of which is currently out on tender, and a mooted control centre which is likely to be set up by merging the existing telemetry and work control units based in Altnagelvin and in north Belfast. Speaking after the meeting, he said: "NI Water is looking for a new headquarters and I set out the convincing argument for such an entity to come to Derry."

Bank Holiday Post Hours

Postal arrangements for the Bank Holiday on Monday, 31 August will see Royal Mail not making any deliveries and only very limited collections on Monday, 31 August. However, full normal service will resume next day, Tuesday, 1st September. The Post Office branches will all be closed on Monday, 31 August and will reopen next day. Customers should note that information about payment of pensions and benefits will be displayed on special notices in branches. As regards Parcelforce Worldwide, there will be no collections or deliveries on Bank Holiday Monday with full normal service resuming on the Tuesday.

Curtis Censored

The broadcasting regulator Ofcom has found BBC Radio Ulster in breach of its rules after Hollywood actor Tony Curtis swore three times during a live show. The Talkback programme featured Mr Curtis as a studio guest. Two listeners complained to Ofcom which investigated and upheld the complaints. The Hollywood legend, who only appeared to realise the programme was live towards the end of the show, apologised to listeners as did the show's presenter. The incident happened during the show on May 22 just after 1pm.

Whitehouse PS Praised

SDLP South Antrim MLA Thomas Burns has praised the "fantastic effort" of everybody involved at Whitehouse Primary School, ready for the new school term 37 days after it was attacked by arsonists: "This is a superb achievement from all involved at Whitehouse Primary and epitomises the community spirit and the willingness of everyone to overcome adversity to deliver a first-class education to the local schoolchildren," he said. "I wish to congratulate everyone who made that extra effort for Whitehouse and hope the new facilities, whilst created from not ideal circumstances, will provide an excellent temporary base for the next generation of pupils." Newry Art Therapy Launched

The Ulster Cancer Foundation (UCF) has launched a new, free art therapy service for people who have been affected by cancer in Newry and the surrounding area. Starting from the 14th September 2009 the group will meet every Monday at Southern Area Hospice, St. John's House, Newry. Bringing art therapy to Newry is part of UCF's wider aim to regionalise the charity's care services so that cancer patients and their families can benefit from services on their doorstep and improve their quality of life.

INI Boosts SMEs

Invest Northern Ireland (INI) last year helped 51 local small businesses invest over £215,000 to boost their competitiveness by developing product, process and technical improvements. Companies took forward innovative, small-scale projects focused on areas such as identifying and exploiting Intellectual Property, improving product performance and quality control. INI offered support worth over £85,000 towards the investments under an initiative aimed specifically at supporting technical development in small businesses. As a result, companies have overcome obstacles to progress and improved their ability to target new market opportunities.

UTV Escapes ITV News Cutbacks
News operations at Ulster Television are to be saved from widespread cut-backs by the national broadcaster ITV. Neither UTV or its Scottish equivalent, STV are to be hit by the £40m cost-savings initiated by ITV. Both UTV and STV are independent companies and are not affected by the decision.
