Ulster Carpet Mills voted as one of the best UK companies

Ulster Carpet Millshas been voted by employees as the top 100 best UK companies to work for in a survey conducted by The Sunday Times.

While hundreds of major companies and organisations entered for the awards, Ulster Carpet Mills maintained their place in the top 50 UK companies to take 47th place.

Leading foodstore chain ASDA took top spot, followed by in second place computer software giant Microsoft, and hi-fi retailer Richer Sounds in third place in the league table.

The prestigious awards were recently presented at a ceremony held at the Hilton Metropole in central London.

The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work For, is the only independent survey that ranks British companies on the basis of feedback from the company’s employees. It is widely regarded as one of the most comprehensive guides to the best employers in Britain.

The judging process started in Q4 last year when a detailed survey was distributed by the Sunday Times and sent to randomly chosen employees.

Each company also completed a questionnaire was by covering a wide range of issues such as work policies, philosophy and culture.

On the basis of the entries, from both the employee surveys and questionnaires, the companies were ranked in the top 100 best companies to work for.

The competition is open to companies with more than 250 employees, which have been trading for more than seven years.

Pensions deficit tops £55bn for FTSE 100 companies
The combined pension scheme deficit of FTSE 100 listed companies has soared to over £55 billion in the year to July 2003, according to a report published today by actuarial consulting firm Lane Clark & Peacock (LCP). The report says that the estimated deficit equates to 6% of the total market capitalisation of the FTSE 100.
