Sports Minister launches 2002 Golden Cow Youth Games

Minister for Sports, Michael McGimpsey, has launched the third annual Golden Cow Youth Games, which are due to take place in May this year.

Speaking in Parliament Buildings, Stormont on Friday 22 March, the Minister officially launched the event, and emphasised the importance of recognising the many benefits which sport can bring to the community.

Mr McGimpsey said: “Sport can no longer be regarded as an optional extra in Northern Ireland – it is an integral part of our society. As well as providing a positive outlet for people’s pent up energy and enthusiasm, it also has many positive spin-offs for everyone involved.

“For competitors, sport increases health, fitness levels and does wonders for an individual’s confidence and self esteem. Equally importantly, it helps to keep youngsters out of trouble.”

The Youth Games, the biggest event of its kind in Northern Ireland, will be held on Saturday 11 May at Queen’s Playing Fields. Around 2,500 young people are expected to take part in a range of 16 sports categories, including athletics, badminton, basketball, rugby, soccer and Gaelic games.

The Youth Games are organised by the Sports Council for Northern Ireland, Belfast City Council and the Queen’s University of Belfast and sponsored by Golden Cow.

“The Games have established a tremendous platform on which to build for the future and I am confident that the event can be sustained for many years to come”, Mr McGimpsey concluded.
