Donegal Council To Shed Staff

Jobs are to be lost in the North West with shock news that a local council is to reduce staffing levels.

More than 70 workers are expected to lose their jobs at Donegal County Council with staff being told this week that their contracts would not be renewed.

It is understood the job losses are due to a reduction in central government funding with a necessary reduction in salary costs - which must be cut by 3%.

Meanwhile, Donegal councillors have separately called for a meeting with officials from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government in a bid to resolve the uncertainty hanging over the future of Ballyshannon and Bundoran's fire stations.

The issue was raised at this week's Donegal Electoral Area meeting that was also attended by the county's Acting Chief Fire Officer, Bobby McMenamin.

Concern has been voiced by a number of Ballyshannon and Bundoran councillors and local fire personnnel at moves to amalgamate both towns' fire services to one combined unit at Finner.

The Department had recently informed county councillors that if the Finner station does not go ahead, they must prioritise which station in Ballyshannon or Bundoran is built first.

It is not known what impact such an amalgamation would have on staffing levels.
