Queen Honours Iraq Troops

A service was held today at St Paul's Cathedral to mark to contribution of UK troops who served in Iraq.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh led the ceremony, along with the Prince of Wales and the Princess Royal.

They gathered at the church to commemorate the 179 killed during the Gulf operation, which officially ended in April.

Tony Blair, the prime minister when the conflict began in 2003, joined veterans and families of army personnel to recognise the loss of life.

He sat with Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Conservative leader David Cameron and other political figures.

Around 120,000 military and civilian took part in the Iraq operation.

Today a candle was lit in the cathedral to remember the 179 lives lost.

The mother of 24-year-old Cpl Ben Leaning, who was killed by roadside bomb in 2007, lit the flame.

Tracey Hazel said she was honoured to take part in the service.

"The service is a fantastic idea. It makes me so proud to be British and a lot of other people should be."
