Sussex Soldier Buried
Less than two weeks before the traditional Poppy Day remembrance is marked, the funeral of a soldier from Sussex who was killed soon after he arrived in Afghanistan is being held later. Guardsman Jamie Janes, 20, of 1st Battalion The Grenadier Guards, was killed on a foot patrol near Nad-e-Ali district centre in Helmand. Three of his colleagues were also wounded in the blast on 5 October. Guardsman Janes, who came from Brighton and was described by his commanding officer as a "soldier to his heart", will be laid to rest in Hove.
Death Driver Fined
A lorry driver has been fined £500 and ordered to pay £1,000 costs after a collision left a farmer in a coma. Robert Smith admitted careless driving after colliding with a car driven by Elfed Jones, of Treuddyn, Flintshire. Mr Jones, 62, who was towing a trailer of sheep, was in a coma for several months and required care in a specialist brain injury unit. Smith, 43, of Ruthin, Denbighshire, initially denied the charge but changed his plea, Llandudno magistrates heard. The court heard that Smith, 43, had been driving an empty Leyland tipper lorry back to Hendre quarry near Mold on the A494 when he braked too late behind a car stopping to turn right into the Vale Country Club. He swerved to avoid it but collided head-on with a 4 x 4 vehicle driven by Mr Jones, who was heading to Ruthin market.

Scotland's legacy of post-war architecture is to be the focus of a conference in November hosted by Historic Scotland. It is opening the debate on protecting and celebrating the variety and innovative techniques used to create striking architecture since 1945. Scotland: Building for the Future will take place at the Bonar Hall at the University of Dundee on Tuesday November 24, 2009 and will be opened by the Minister for Culture, External Affairs and the Constitution, Michael Russell MSP. A new website has been launched in addition to the conference to allow anyone with an interest to become involved in the debate at www.celebratingscotlandsarchitecture.org

Woman's Body Found On Street In Edinburgh
An investigation has been launched following the discovery of a woman's body on Calton Hill in Edinburgh. It is understood that the body was found on a footpath at about 04:30 on Thursday morning. The area has been sealed to allow for a forensic examination to be carried out.

15-Year-Old Arrested Over Secondary School Stabbing
Police have arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection with the stabbing of two girls outside a secondary school in Glasgow. Police Scotland said the two girls, aged 13 and 15, were attacked outside a school in the Barmulloch area on 19 March.

Rape Investigation Against MP Mark Pritchard Dropped
An investigation into rape allegations against Conservative MP Mark Pritchard have been dropped, Scotland Yard has confirmed. Mr Pritchard, MP for The Wrekin in Shropshire, was arrested on 2 December, however he was released on police bail. He has now been informed no further action will be taken.

The headquarters of the Metropolitan Police has been sold, London's deputy mayor for police and crime has confirmed. The proceeds from the sale of New Scotland Yard (NSY) are to be reinvested in frontline policing, Stephen Greenhalgh has said. NSY has been the headquarters of the Met since 1967 but has been sold as part of cost-cutting measures.
