No Further Swine Flu Deaths In NI
The Stormont Health Minister Michael McGipmsey's latest swine flu bulletin suggests the flu pandemic is taking a general downturn.
There have been no swine flu related deaths in the last week and the number of new hospitalised cases have decreased by over 50% during the week.
Out of hours calls for 'flu/flu like illness have decreased from 324 to 272, an overall reduction of 16%. The total number of anti-viral prescriptions issued decreased by 23%.
Although GP consultation rates for 'flu like illness did increase slightly this week (up 8%) with the rates highest in the 0-4 year age group, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Michael McBride said: "The slight increase in GP consultation rates this week may be partly due to an increase in the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) activity which causes respiratory illness, particularly in young children, and presents with symptoms similar to flu."
Mr McGimpsey commented: "Swine flu continues to circulate in the community and is particularly affecting the under fives but the general downward trend of the figures is very encouraging and suggests that our preparations and plans are working. "

Swine Flu Cases Still Falling
The level of flu activity across Northern Ireland has again dropped. The Department of Health's weekly flu bulletin - covering the week ending Friday 29 January shows that GP consultation rates for flu have decreased from 23.2/100,000 population to 18.1/100,000 -a 22% decrease.

Further Swine Flu Cases Confirmed
Lab tested cases of swine flu across Northern Ireland continue to rise. However, while many more people have been diagnosed as swine flu sufferers, the number of laboratory confirmed cases of swine flu have risen by just 16 - a far lower rate of increase than anywhere else in the British Isles.
