Freeze Causing Chaos

Thousands of schools on mainland Britain remained closed today as the heavy snow fall and sub-zero temperatures strengthened their grip across the country.

Travel has also been widely disrupted with airports and train terminals continuing to battle the elements, amid growing passenger backlogs and impassible road networks.

Last night saw further snow fall in Scotland, which later spread to more southern parts of England.

North Wales has also experienced freezing, wintry conditions, while Northern Ireland's roads remain hazardous.

Some UK hospitals have implemented contingency plans sets aside to deal with major incidents, with the army being drafted in to help stranded drivers in parts of Hampshire.

Regional rail providers have reduced services and this morning several major airports remained closed, as the clear-up of runaways became impossible.

No flights left or entered Bristol, Exeter or London Gatwick airports this morning, while Cardiff is not expected to reopen until later this afternoon.

Heathrow, Birmingham, Luton and Southampton have all warned passengers to expect serious delays.

Authorities have advised drivers to avoid any unnecessary travel, as emergency crews continue efforts to rescue motorists caught in accidents and those experiencing engine breakdowns.

Forecasters have suggested the cold snap is the worst recorded in the UK for around 30 years.

Some local councils and roads departments are reporting an unprecedented use of salt and grit reserves. Concerns have been raised that supplies could become unsustainable.
