Soldier Dies In Afghanistan Gun Battle

Another British soldier has been killed in a gun battle in Afghanistan today, (Tuesday), the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.

The victim was from 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, attached to 4th Regiment Royal Artillery.

He was involved in "small arms fire engagement" with insurgent forces in the Nad-e Ali district of Helmand province, the MoD said.

Next of kin have been informed. It brings the number of troops killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 293.

Meanwhile. it was revealed today that another young soldier who was killed in Afghanistan had always wanted to join the armed forces.

L/Cpl Alan Cochran from St Asaph, Denbighshire - who was a member of the 1st Battalion The Mercian Regiment - told his former head teacher that it was his aim to join up, but last week, he died during a gun battle with the Taliban in Helmand Province.

Ashley Jones, Head of Mold Alun School, said everyone was shocked at the death and said that he knew Alan Cochran's sole ambition had been to join the armed forces.

The Stormont First Minister Peter Robinson has this morning expressed his sympathy to the family of a soldier from the 1st Battalion Irish Guards who has been killed in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced that he was shot in an ambush while patrolling in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand Province yesterday afternoon.

Soldier Is Latest Afghanistan Victim
Another British soldier has been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan. In what is fast becoming a near daily litany of tragedy, the soldier, from the 2nd Battalion The Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, died in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province on Wednesday. Next of kin have been informed.

Two Soldiers Killed In Afghanistan
Two British soldiers have become the latest victims to be added to the increasing death toll in Afghanistan. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed the death of a soldier from 4th Battalion the Parachute Regiment in the troubled country yesterday. It has also emerged that the serviceman was in fact the second casualty in one day.
