Arrest Follows Latest Belfast Stabbing

A 24-year-old old man has been stabbed in the neck and hands in Belfast city centre.

He was attacked in Skipper Street on Tuesday evening.

Belfast Alliance Councillor Catherine Curran has expressed her shock after the assault and said: "I am shocked that such a vicious attack was carried out in Belfast city centre.

"This man could easily have been killed. It shows the disregard for life that his attacker has.

"I hope that this victim will make a quick recovery from his injuries.

"If anybody has any information about this attack then I would urge them to contact the police," she said.

However, a man was arrested shortly afterwards in Ballyclare, the PSNI have said.

This is not the first such incident, as, in February this year, an 18-year-old man was stabbed several times in the back in Belfast city centre during a robbery in which his 15-year-old female friend was sprayed in the face.

The assault happened in Music Hall Lane shortly before 8pm. Two male youths in their mid-teens attacked the pair before making off with their mobile phone.

Meanwhile, a man has been stabbed in the face during a suspected sectarian attack in Londonderry.

The 26-year-old man was walking with a 19-year-old woman in the Chapel Road area of the city around 2am on Wednesday when two men jumped out of a car and attacked him with knives.

He was stabbed in the ribs during the assault and taken to hospital for treatment, but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A PSNI spokeswoman said they are treating the incident as sectarian.
