NI Has Worst Job Prospects In UK

Business confidence in Northern Ireland has taken a severe knock according to a recent survey.

The research, which reports that recruitment prospects in Northern Ireland are now the worst in the United Kingdom, was carried out by job agency Manpower.

It also suggests more employers are looking to shed staff or freeze numbers than those looking to hire workers and business experts said they feared the situation could get even worse.

The survey asked 2,100 UK employers about whether they intended to hire workers in the coming three months.

The net employment outlook was then calculated by subtracting those employers who planned to reduce staffing levels from those who plan to hire.

Results suggest the UK is split in half, with the south hiring staff while the north, including Northern Ireland (with a result of -10%), is not.

The east of England has the most optimistic outlook of any region (11%), ahead of the East Midlands (+8%) and the South West (+7%).

Along with Northern Ireland, Wales also fared badly with -6%.
