British-Irish Meeting Highlighting Quinn Murder

The controversial - and brutal - murder of 21-year Paul Quinn in County Monaghan last month is to dominate proceedings at a meeting of the British-Irish Inter-Parliamentary Body in Oxfordshire later today.

The delegates at the meeting are to press Northern Ireland Secretary Shaun Woodward to make a statement about the killing.

Mr Quinn was beaten to death by a gang of men during a paramilitary-style attack after being lured to an isolated farm in Co Monaghan from his home across the border in Cullyhanna.

He had previously fallen foul of the family of alleged local IRA men and had been ordered out of the area as a result.

His family therefore insist that members of the Provisional IRA were behind the murder, while a unionist politician, Lord John Laird, has said the killing was undertaken and sanctioned by leading republicans in south Armagh.

He used parliamentary privilege to name the alleged killers and highlight the highly organised nature of the fatal assault involving as many as 20 masked men, some using iron bars to beat Paul Quinn to death – while others stood lookout and provided vehicles for the getaway.

Sinn Fein has denied any republicans were involved, saying the incident arose as a result of a feud between criminals.
