PSNI To Bring Back Checkpoints

The PSNI has announced a stepping up of its operations in response to an increased level of threat by dissident republicans.

The police initiative comes just days after a member of republican splinter group, the Real IRA, told an Irish newspaper they were planning a new wave of attacks on police and local businesses.

A police spokesman said: "The public are urged to be patient and to co-operate with police in this operation which is designed to ensure the safety of the whole community."

Detectives said the public are likely to notice increased activity, such as the re-introduction of vehicle checkpoints."

This is the first time the PSNI have issued such a threat warning in Northern Ireland for a number of years.

In November, the Real IRA shot two police officers in Londonderry and Dungannon, and police fear dissidents could be planning another shooting or bomb attack.
