Ahern Warns Of Difficulties In Irish Operation In Chad

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern has voiced concerns over the European Union-United Nations sponsored mission involving Irish troops in Chad.

Speaking to students at Harvard University in Boston last night, Mr Ahern said the Government belived the operation would be a difficult one for the Irish involved in the mission.

However he told the audience it was right for Irish soldiers to participate in the military operation in order to help save the lives of tens of thousands of displaced people and refugees from Darfur.

According to the United Nations, Chad has been affected by a humanitarian crisis since at least 2001. As of this year, 280,000 refugees from Sudan’s Darfur region have apparently crippled the country, with UN spokesperson Maurizio Giuliano stating: "If we do not manage to provide aid at sufficient levels, the humanitarian crisis might become a humanitarian catastrophe".

America and France continue to support the government and President Idriss Delby, who has been accused of heavy handedness and corruption by humanitarian groups. Transparency International named Chad the most corrupt country in the world in 2005.

Mr Delby recently removed the country's constitutional term limits, allowing him to continue in office indefinitely.

American Oil Multinational Exxon have a major interest in the country also and were granted drilling rights in 1999.

Also during the address, Mr Ahern spoke to students at the university of the importance of the Lisbon Treaty.

On this, the last day of his final overseas visit as Taoiseach, Mr Ahern will deliver a speech at the John F Kennedy Library in Boston.

Members of the Kennedy family, including Senator Ted Kennedy, are due to attend the speech.
