Second Man Arrested In 'Horrific' Murder Case

A second man has been arrested in connection with the horrific murders of two young French students.

Gabriel Ferez and Laurent Bonomo, both 23, suffered a total of 243 stab wounds to the head, neck and chest before being set on fire at a ground floor flat in Sterling Gardens in London's New Cross on June 30.

A 21-year-old who was arrested in the early hours of Saturday has been released with no further action.

A police spokesman said a 33-year-old man handed himself in at a south London police station.

Both victims were French bio-chemistry students who had been on an exchange scheme at Imperial College for about one month.

Mr Bonomo was from Velaux, near Amiens, and Mr Ferez from Prouzel, near Aix-en-Provence.

Post mortem examinations gave the cause of death in both cases as "multiple stab wounds to head, neck and torso".

Tests also revealed that Mr Bonomo was stabbed nearly 200 times, with a further 80 wounds inflicted after he died.

Police have released an e-fit of a man seen fleeing the crime scene in Sterling Gardens after 10pm.

Witnesses have described the suspect as white, between 30 and 40, slim build and wearing a light coloured baseball cap, dark top, blue jeans and white trainers.

Detective Chief Inspector Mick Duthie has issued a fresh appeal and said "its possible someone who lives here, was visiting or passing through will remember something, however small, to help us solve this horrific crime".

It is believed the students were last known to be still alive on Sunday at 1am when Mr Bonomo telephoned his girlfriend in France.

One lead is that the flat in Sterling Gardens, which Mr Bonomo was renting, had been burgled on 23 June and a laptop was stolen.

It is also believed that bank cards and two Sony PSP games consoles were taken on the day the pair were murdered.

However, forensic experts have found no evidence of forced entry after Sunday's murders, which suggests that a set of keys might also have been stolen to gain entry on a second, deadly second occasion.

Mr Ferez's parents, Francoise and Olivier said in a statement to the person(s) responsible for the murders that "we will not leave you in peace" and that their son's killer would "not be able to live in hiding forever".

French newspapers have said the shocking murders "highlight how dangerous London has become".

It is understood both students had been due to return to France at the end of July after working on the research project into chains of protein within DNA at Imperial College.

Students at the Polytech' Clermont-Ferrand will hold a silent procession in memory of their murdered peers this afternoon.
