Jean Quigley Suspect Remanded

The man accused of murdering a Londonderry mother of four has been charged with her killing when he appeared in court in Castlerea, Co Roscommon, on Friday.

Stephen Cahoon, 36, from Harvey Street in Derry, was asked where he wanted to be tried in relation to the death of Jean Quigley in July, and has opted for the Republic of Ireland.

Mr Cahoon was remanded in continuing custody to reappear at the same court later this month.

His solicitor said his client opted for trial south of the border but reserved his right to change his mind, which he can do at any time before his arraignment.

He also urged the authorities to deal with the case as soon as possible as it was unlikely his client would get bail in the Republic, and expressed concern about publicity surrounding the case to date.

The accused was initially arrested by Gardaí last month in Donegal town after a PSNI request – but action was delayed when he was rushed to hospital.

He had been taken to Sligo General Hospital for treatment from Ballyshannon Garda station after he complained of feeling unwell.

However, once he left hospital with a clean bill of health, he was brought to court last week.

The arrest was made under Section 2 of the Irish Criminal Law Act 1976 allowing trial in either Irish jurisdiction.
