Royal Marine Killed In Helmand

A 25-year-old Royal Marine has been killed while on routine patrol in a southern district of Afghanistan.

Alex Lucas, from Peebles, in Scotland, died from his injuries following an explosion close to the treacherous Helmand province yesterday. The father of the former Peebles Rovers footballer said the news was 'heartbreaking'.

Adrian Lucas added: "It is dreadful. You just can't imagine what it is like to have these people arrive on your doorstep to tell you."

Alex, who served with 45 Commando, is the 126th British service personnel to die in Afghanistan since the start of the US-led operation in October 2001.

His unit are based at Arbroath and were posted to Afghanistan in October.

An Ministry of Defence spokesman said: "It is with great sadness that the MoD must confirm that a Royal Marine from 45 Commando was killed as a result of an explosion in the Kajaki area of Helmand province.

"He was taking part in a patrol at the time.

"He received medical treatment at the scene. However, he unfortunately died of his wounds while being taken to the military hospital at Camp Bastion."

Commander Paula Rowe said: "The tragic death of this Royal Marine has left everyone in Task Force Helmand immensely saddened.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this dreadful time."

MoD names Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan
The Ministry of Defence has named the Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday as 23-year-old Richard Watson. Marine Watson, of 42 Commando Royal Marines, was part of a patrol in the north of Now Zad in the north of the Helmand province that came under attack from Taliban forces.

A Royal Marine from 40 Commando Royal Marines has been killed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The marine was killed in an explosion while on a foot patrol in the Sangin district of Helmand province on Thursday (July 8).

Two UK Troops Killed In Afghanistan
Two British servicemen have been killed by an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed. The pair - one from 29 Command Regiment Royal Artillery and a marine from 45 Commando Royal Marines - were killed by an explosion in Helmand Province.

Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan named
The Ministry of Defence has named the Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan on Sunday as Lance Corporal Michael Jones. LCpl Jones was killed in a gun battle with Taliban insurgents in the Nimruz province in the southwest of the country.
