'New' 11-Plus Gets Underway

Prospective grammar school students can begin the new, unregulated entrance process for the major schools from today.

Many such grammar schools have now started to take registrations for their 'private' entrance exams to replace the contentious 11-plus selection.

There will be two sets of tests with different content but both state and Catholic-run organisations have co-ordinated timings for the assessment.

The process beings today with them taking applications, with a closing date of September 18.

Usually about 15,000 pupils sit the official test, but it is not known how this new system will affect numbers.

Pupils will receive their results in the first week of next February.

The main group, the Association for Quality Education is charging £35 although pupils receiving free school meals will not be charged.

The Post-Primary Transfer Consortium, mainly Catholic grammar schools, will not charge however.

The organisations' tests are based on English and maths being taught in primary schools.

Application forms can be downloaded from school websites, requested by post or collected on grammar school open nights.

The NI Education Minister Caitriona Ruane have warned teachers not to coach for the exams and has also highlighted the threat of legal action.

Both organisations say their tests are based on English and Maths being taught in primary schools and say no coaching should be needed, although primary schools are already running extra lessons for pupils who will be sitting the tests in November and December.
