Newry Victim 'Severely Beaten'

The man whose body was discovered in Co Down early today had been seriously assaulted.

Detectives are investigating the shock find in a laneway in Newry.

The victim was discovered at Upper Edward Street shortly before 1am on Tuesday morning.

Newry's Mayor John Feehan, from the SDLP, told the BBC today that the victim is believed to have been aged in his 20s or 30s and may have been "severely beaten".

It appears the man was attacked as he walked along a pathway behind Newry's swimming pool.

There are as yet no details about the identity of the man, but it is expected that a post mortem will be carried out later today to establish the exact cause of death.

Police are trying to establish his identity and have also appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
