Lockerbie Bomber Drops Second Appeal

The Libyan man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing has dropped his second appeal against his conviction.

The news comes as the Scottish Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill continues to consider whether or not Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, who is terminally ill with prostate cancer, should be released on compassionate grounds or be transferred to a Libyan jail.

His legal team have argued that al-Megrahi's condition has "worsened very considerably".

Mr MacAskill's decision is die within the next two weeks.

Megrahi was convicted of the bombing of Pan Am flight 103, which crashed over Lockberie in Scotland on December 21, 1988, killing all 259 people on board the flight and 11 people on the ground, in 2001 and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Seven US senators have urged Mr MacAskill ti ensure that Megrahi serves out his sentence in Scotland.

Some relatives of the victims are reported to be disappointed that the appeal has been dropped, saying that it will leave answered questions about the bombing, while other relatives have argued that Megrahi should not be freed on compassionate grounds.
